Kyiv holidays

, Ukraine

Bold architecture surrounded by the stunning countryside makes Ukraine’s capital one of the best-kept secret locations for a city break. It’s also one of Europe’s oldest metropolitan centres, dating all the way back to the 5th century. Today, you can still wander around medieval cobbled streets and take in the atmosphere of a thriving cosmopolitan city that’s proud of its roots.

Golden domes glisten in the sunlight, while towering belfries clad in white stone create a dazzling spectacle, especially as the sun goes down. Wide-open spaces and parks make this a relaxed and very green city, giving you plenty of opportunity to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. With excellent public transport (including a funicular railway that takes you from the Upper city down to Podil), getting around is easy. There’s plenty to see and do, and with Qatar Airways Holidays you can travel and explore everything that this ancient city has to offer.

    Kyiv Holiday experiences

    • With over a millennia and a half’s worth of history packed into a relatively small area, you can be sure of finding something unusual to see and do in Kyiv. One of the city’s greatest attractions is the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra or Cave Monastery, which is one of the oldest complexes in Ukraine. Tours will take you around the caves, some parts of which date all the way back to the 10th century.
    • If you fancy some serious shopping then head to Khreshchatyk Street, which is in the heart of the city and full of great cafés. Bear in mind that many of the street signs will be in the Cyrillic script, so it helps to have a guide book handy. Don’t worry though, Kyiv is easy to navigate, and you can always try out your language skills and ask for directions.
    • One of the iconic spots is the golden dome of St Michael’s Monastery, which is close to St Sophia’s Cathedral. It’s surrounded by a stunning park, making it a tranquil spot for relaxation. Kyiv has plenty of beaches, thanks to the various islands that make up the city. One of the best is the Hidropark Island in the Dnipro river, which is a great place to cool off when the weather heats up in summer. In fact, water sports are very popular in Kyiv, and the city has several aqua parks, including Dream Town and the Aqua Park Terminal.
    • The café culture in Kyiv is wonderful, and don’t miss the local ice cream, either, which is delicious.
