Helsinki holiday experiences
- Summer in Helsinki is when the city really bursts into life. With plenty of green spaces both in and around the city, it has a relaxed, open feel that is best explored by bike or on foot. If you are limited on time then book onto one of the Helsinki Itineraries, which will take you on a guided tour of the city’s best spots, including Senate Square, the Uspenski Orthodox Cathedral (an architectural masterpiece), the Market Square, and through the centre of the old quarter. Top of the must-see list during the summer is Suomenlinna. Referred to as the ‘Gibraltar of the North’, it’s one of the most impressive sea fortresses in the Baltic. The imposing site is now a living museum. Check out the catacombs, or picnic on the ramparts, watching the ships go by.
- Helsinki is made up of a series of islands, and if you want to learn more about the native culture of northern Europe then the Seuasaari Open Air Museum is a must. A collection of authentic Finnish houses have been collected from across the country and lovingly restored, giving you a fascinating glimpse into the diversity of life in the north.
- If you want to take trip and visit the beach then head to Pihlajasaari, which is popular with the locals. It has sandy beaches, cool, shallow water, and plenty of cafés and restaurants, making it an ideal spot for a great day out.
- Back in the centre of the city there are plenty of parks to explore, such as Esplanadi park and the larger Central Park. On warm summer evenings, you’ll hear live music and get the chance to watch open-air theatre performances for free.
