    France holiday experiences

    • Much like its neighbours, Spain, Germany and Italy, France has some of the world’s best ski resorts. Head to Chamonix to ski in the shadow of Mont Blanc, Courchevel for some of the most luxurious hotels in the world, and the three valleys for varied skiing and fantastic après ski.
    • When heading to France for the first time most people go straight to the capital. Paris, the city of lights, with its allure of romance, mystery and intrigue. The Eiffel Tower twinkling at night is a delight, and it doesn’t matter how often you see it. Beat the queues by walking up to the second platform. There are a lot of stairs but there is no rush and the views are specular. Other sites not to be missed in Paris include the Notre Dame, Louvre, Tuileries gardens, Montmartre and the Arc d’Triomphe.
    • If you want to see some of the most stunning chateaux in France, then head to the Loire Valley. In one day you can experience a whistle-stop tour of French architecture by visiting Château de Chambord, Chenonceau, Blois and Cheverny. In the summer, hire a bike and cycle along the banks of the Loire to experience the tranquillity and beauty of the area.
    • Follow in the footsteps of many movie stars and enjoy a break on the French Riviera. Nice’s legendary promenade, beaches and belle époque architecture make it the perfect place to base yourself. Enjoy day trips to Cannes, Monaco and St Tropez and live the life of a Hollywood star for a few days.

    Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to travel to France for a holiday?
      +
      –

France is a surprisingly big country, so you have a wide variation of climate. From snowy winters in the Alps and the Pyrenees to balmy Mediterranean summers in Nice and Cannes, the different regions and their corresponding climates make France an all-year-round destination. We recommend that you investigate the specific region you’re planning to travel to, but there are some generalisations that can help you time your holiday just right.

Generally, July and August are considered to be the high season, but bear in mind that this is when most French people take their holidays as well, so while the weather may be generally warmer and sunnier, the roads will be incredibly crowded, especially around major cities like Paris. The shoulder seasons of April to June, and September to October are ideal if you prefer more laid-back sight-seeing, while Paris in the spring is an absolute must-see at least once in your life. The north and west have a temperate climate, with spring temperatures hovering around the mid-teens°C, often climbing up into the low 20s°C as you move into early summer.

In the mountains, the peak ski season runs from late December to March. Expect good snow in February, with deep powder in the higher Alpine resorts, and temperatures of around 0-5°C on average.

For summer heat, head south to the Mediterranean coast, where peak summer temperatures can easily hit the 30s°C. To make the most of France, the shoulder seasons offer a pleasant variation no matter where you go, but expect more rain in the north and along the German border, and the occasional strong wind (known as the Mistral) along the Rhône Valley.

Where the best place to travel in France for a holiday?
      +
      –

This is a difficult question to answer, as France is probably one of the most diverse holiday destinations in the world. Our top tip: don’t try and see too much in one go! France is one of those destinations that you can revisit time and time again and see something different every trip.

If you’re looking for a family beach holiday then the beaches of Normandy and Brittany are ideal. If you prefer it a little warmer then the southern Mediterranean coastline offers plenty of charming boltholes for a quiet getaway with a loved one.

Paris is one of the world’s greatest cities, and if you’re a lover of culture and cuisine, this has to be your first choice. But don’t forget about the little villages scattered all over the country, where you’ll find a genuinely warm and friendly welcome, some incredible food, and much smaller crowds. The best way to really get to know rural France is to hire a car and go touring, using a central location as your base, and then filling your holiday with day trips. If you prefer skiing or hiking then head to the mountains – the Alps in the north and the Pyrenees in the south.

What is the latest travel advice for holidays in France?
      +
      –

France is a safe country to visit and welcomes tourists from all over the world all year round. It’s best to try and avoid the peak season during July and August as this is when the roads, beaches and attractions are at their busiest. Also avoid Easter, as this is a big family holiday in France and traffic congestion around the main resorts can be truly epic!

The lavender fields of Nice – France is famous for its perfumes, and some of the finest are made down in the southern region around Nice, where you’ll find acres and acres of deliciously-fragrant lavender fields. It’s an amazing sight, and you can even buy some organic lavender oil to remind you of your trip.

Paris in the spring – what can we say about the ultimate romantic destination? From the Eiffel Tower to the Louvre, strolling along the banks of the River Seine watching the artists or stopping for a while for a coffee in a bistro, Paris in the spring is enchanting, magical, and truly beautiful.

Grotte de Lascaux, Bordeaux – Home to some of the most famous prehistoric cave paintings in the world, Grotte de Lascaux is in the heart of beautiful Bordeaux and is just 2km southeast of the medieval town of Montignac. Rediscovered in 1940 after being sealed off for millennia, it’s a fascinating glimpse into mankind’s distant past.

Which are the best places to visit in France?
      +
      –

It really depends on what interests you because France, quite literally, has everything! If you love history and the sheer pomp and ceremony of the pre-Revolutionary period, then a visit to the Palace of Versailles is an absolute must. It’s just 20km from Paris and genuinely breath-taking, with formal gardens and a huge palace filled with treasures and works of art. Lyon is the country’s second-largest city that’s packed with history dating back to Roman times, while Montpellier is one of the jewels of the south.

For the high life, you have to head to the French Riviera and the Cote d’Azur, home to the rich and famous. If you’re a film buff then Cannes is the place to be, especially during the internationally-famous Cannes Film Festival.

Rural France is utterly charming, with rolling green countryside dotted with hundreds of magnificent Chateaux and beautifully preserved medieval villages. The Loire Valley is famous for its huge castles, while Provence is where you’ll find those stunning lavender fields and perfumeries.

For families with young kids, there’s the magic of Disneyland Paris to experience, while adventure lovers will be drawn to the dramatic peaks of the Alps and the Pyrenees.
