Athens holiday experiences
- You cannot visit Athens without visiting the most important ancient site in the Western World, the Acropolis. Looked over by the Parthenon it can be seen from all over Athens. Watch as the sunlight turns these ancient structures from pearly white to honey yellow throughout the day – a perfect photo opportunity. You can access the site for free on the first Sunday of every month between November and March.
- The National Archaeological Museum in Athens is one of the most important museums in the world. It is home the the world’s finest collection of Greek antiquities that offer a real insight into Greek life, history and art and goes right back to the Neolithic and classical eras. Ancient sculptures, pottery, jewellery and frescoes found throughout Greece are all housed in this fascinating museum.
- Shopping is a favourite pastime of the local Athenians and the number of shops and market stalls can be rather mind-blowing. For international designers and jewellers head to Voukourestiou, while for chic designer boutiques you need to look throughout Kolonaki. For souvenirs, leather goods and antiques then Plaka and Monastiraki should satisfy your need.
- No visit to any Greek city would be complete without a visit to a Stadium, and Athens is no different. Sitting between two hills is the Grand Panathenaic Stadium, built in the 4th century. It is said that 1000 wild animals were slaughtered here when Hadrian was inaugurated in AD 120. There are 70,000 seats, a running track and field. What you see is an exact replica of the original, restored in 1895 for the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. It was used in the 2004 Olympics and is occasionally used for public events.
