    • If you’re going to Brazil for the sun, sea and sand, Rio de Janeiro is an idyllic destination. Home to the famous beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana (both immortalised in song), it has the benefit of miles of golden sands, beautiful blue seas — all right on the doorstep of a thriving metropolis and overlooked by the iconic statue of Cristo Redentor. In the cities themselves there are all of the museums, galleries and shops you would expect, but also stunning colonial architecture and buildings by Oscar Niemeyer to be admired.
    • If you’re travelling in February or March, you may well be lucky enough to catch part of the carnival that sweeps the country for a week. The atmosphere is electric with the iconic samba parades driving through Rio and São Paulo and alternative celebrations in other cities. Although some areas are quieter than others, wherever you are you should be prepared to join in the party.
    • If you want to escape the city, Brazil has some of the most amazing stretches of rainforest and jungle in the world. Key areas to visit are the Amazon Rainforest and the Atlantic Forest, and you should also make time to see the Iguaçu Falls, a truly spectacular waterfall.
    • If you’re planning a Brazil culinary package, you will find a hugely diverse menu across the country, with certain dishes only to be found in specific regions. The national dish, however, is a filling stew known as feijoada, which is usually served with rice, while the coastal towns tend to specialise in seafood.
