- Many people come to Muscat to visit the Mutrah Corniche souq. Now under a roof, the souq still retains a lot of its old world Arab charm. Bargaining and haggling are expected, but don’t expect to save huge amounts. Cards are accepted at most shops, but cash is better for deals. Getting lost in the souq is part of the fun. If you can, try and find the Aladdin’s cave of beads and the Al Ahli coffee shop, which is famous for its fresh juices.
- The Grand Mosque was a gift to Oman from the Sultan Qaboos to mark his 30th anniversary. The resplendent building is a brilliant example of modern Islamic architecture. The main prayer hall is home to the second-largest hand-loomed Iranian carpet in the world. The carpet measures 70m by 60m and took 600 women four years to make it. You can visit the mosque and see the exquisite decorations and the complex carpet, but visitors are asked to dress appropriately, with women respectfully requested to cover their hair.
- A dolphin watching tour is a great way to see these creatures in their natural habitat, but also gives you a chance to admire the rugged coastline of Muscat. Dolphin species found off the coast of Muscat include Spinner, Common and Bottle Nose. The rich sea attracts many shoals of fish, making it the perfect hunting ground for Sperm Whales.
- The Royal Opera House opened in 2011 to international acclaim. It was built by the same architects who completed the Grand Mosque and the understated marble exterior protects the glorious interior. Even if you are not intending to see a show, it is worth taking in the beauty of this building.
